RELATED: How to Wipe Your Mac and Reinstall macOS from Scratch What Macs Hard Drives Can You Upgrade? This will help you figure out if you can upgrade the hard drive in your Mac, and help you find the right parts. On the Overview tab you’ll see your Mac’s exact model. To find out what you have, click the Apple logo in the top left corner of the menu bar and select the “About This Mac” option.

Just calling it a MacBook Pro isn’t enough for example, I’ve got MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015). Like you I think I'm gonna pass on Catalina. Before doing anything you need to be sure exactly what model Mac you have. Incidentally, I was a little worried about upgrading and was until recently still running Yosemite, but since I installed the SSD I made the jump to High Sierra and then week or so ago to Mojave. I've taken u/doc_brietz advice and ordered a new battery, if nothing else it's worth spending that small amount to keep what's a cracking machine ticking over. I've only once needed a repair done on it by someone other than myself - which from memory I believe was something to do with the ribbon from the trackpad. For long stretches I depended on it for my livelihood and it really has rarely let me down. Like you I'm really attached to my 2012 MBP. Would've kept the optical as a external disc drive, but right now it's currently doing some hard yards digitally backing all my DVDs. I would definitely have switched the HDD into the optical if mine hadn't died. (Box, plastic, and even microfiber cloth!) I got mine for just under €900 and it was in pristine condition. Give a mid 2015 retina some serious consideration. I believe I now own the two best macbooks ever made.

I only had the 15" a few days before leaving it in to get the battery done but it feels HUGE compared to my 13" (the display is beautiful though) I had planned to sell the 13" to offset the cost of the 15" but I may just suck it up and keep both.I love the 13" so much it will be hard to part with it, so I emphasize.

I just purchased a 2015 15" rmbp, i7, 16gb IG (couldn't find a DG) second had that's eligible for the free battery replacement so that's in the shop getting done right now. (CPU running hot, no matter what I'm doing) other than that it's great. Like you I've wanted to upgrade, but only because the 2012 is starting to age out. It's been the best laptop I've ever had and still runs great, but as I use it for audio I've avoided upping to Catalina. 16gb ram, ssd and hd (instead of dvd) and just recently a new battery. I own a mid 2012 i5 13" from new, that over the years I've maxed out. Just a thought bubble I was keen to hear this group's thoughts on.

Now I realise the best time to sell this laptop was probably 3-4 years ago, but I am curious what your feelings are on the viability of the mid-2012 MBP over the next couple of years?Ģ020/18 12.9 iPad Pro and go all in on iPad OS (may supplement with a cheap windows computer)Ģnd hand Mac Mini or iMac + 11-inch iPad Pro OR I could sell now for around $300 USD and put the money toward a new computer setup. I do need a computer for work things like some FTPs, Adobe programs and remote screen sharing - I work in website and content management.

I could buy a new battery for around $40-45 USD plus upgrade the ram to 16GB for $70 and keep it running a little longer by supplementing with a 11-inch iPad Pro as a daily driver (which I'm keen on).

I personally don't like to keep old tech just for nostalgia sakes and prefer to sell/recycle, but am reluctant to move on. Still running well, particularly with the new SSD (the HDD died last year). Battery on a whopping 1228 cycle count (still holds 3ish hrs of power). 2.5 GHz i5, 8GB memory, 500GB Samsung 860 Evo 500GB SSD installed and running Mojave. I have a Mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro, one owner since new (me). Hi folks, I recently discovered Luke's YouTube channel and had a question I'd be interested to get the community's thoughts on.
